SolarSub has completed a £1.34 million funding round led by Sustainable Ventures. Zinc VC, Scottish Enterprise, the University of Edinburgh’s Old College Capital fund, SFC Capital and the British Business Bank also took part, with support from Innovate UK’s Investor Partnership programme. Funding databases list the raise as a Seed round.

The company is based in Edinburgh, in the UK. It was founded by two University of Edinburgh engineering graduates, CEO Sebastiaan Schalkwijk and COO James Taylor.

SolarSub is going after a basic weakness in solar power. As panels heat up, they produce less electricity and wear out faster, cutting both output and lifetime value. The company’s passive cooling technology keeps modules closer to their ideal operating temperature without pumps or moving parts, which raises energy generation, slows heat-driven degradation and improves project economics.

Earlier tests showed strong gains in hot conditions. Trials at the University of Edinburgh’s FloWave ocean energy research facility recorded an energy uplift of up to 17.5%, and outdoor testing at Heriot-Watt University’s Dubai campus hit peak gains of up to 19%.

The company is starting with floating solar, where direct contact with water makes passive thermal management easier, before moving into the wider utility-scale market. The new funding will pay for further product development, independent testing and deployments with research, utility and industry partners, including trials in several international locations over the coming months. It will also expand SolarSub’s engineering team as it prepares the technology for manufacturing, certification and commercial rollout.

Component makers, EPC contractors and energy consultancies can get verified founder contacts at newly funded cleantech startups every week through the B2B Sales Leads List.
