Rune, a modular data center developer based in San Francisco, has raised $40 million and launched a compute system designed to sit directly at solar generation sites. Spark Capital led the Series A, which brings total funding to $53.5 million.
The new product is called RELIC, short for Renewable Energy Linked Intelligent Compute. The idea is to put to use the energy solar plants generate but never sell, which Rune says can reach 20 percent of output. By tapping stranded electricity at the source, the system skips the meter, the fees, and the grid infrastructure that has become the main bottleneck for data center construction across the country.
Rune says the module can be installed within an hour and energized as little as six weeks after a contract is signed. It runs natively on direct current, so the solar power needs no conversion and avoids the losses that come with switching to AC. The company has already placed a RELIC system at a solar facility in Texas, though it did not name the site.
The California company was founded in 2023 by William Layden, who serves as CEO, and Varun Palivela. Its pitch to AI labs is speed. Compute comes online quickly, powered by renewable energy that would otherwise go to waste, without waiting on a grid connection.
