Remedium Bio has closed $10 million in an initial Series A financing led by Lifespan Vision Ventures, with Eli Lilly and Company and HKX Capital joining the round. The company is based in Needham, Massachusetts.
The idea behind Remedium is to swap out protein therapies that patients currently inject under the skin on a repeating schedule and replace them with gene therapies that can be dialled up or down. If it works, the company argues, patients get durable results at a fraction of what the current course of treatment costs.
That approach runs on what Remedium calls its Prometheus platform, a dose adjustable gene therapy technology built to deliver therapeutic genes through a single injection, with the option to adjust the dose after treatment. The disease targets are large ones: type 2 diabetes, obesity, osteoarthritis and stroke.
Its lead osteoarthritis candidate, RMD1101, is an investigational gene therapy that the company describes as the only single injection treatment built on the regenerative mechanism of the FGF18 protein.
The money will go toward advancing lead programs, expanding the platform technologies, and preparing for first in human clinical studies. For a biotech at this stage, that last item is the one everything else is measured against.
