River AI has raised $1.1 billion, an unusual figure for a company that was founded this year. The round was co led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, with Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator and Temasek all taking part. It was announced on August 11, 2026, and reported at an estimated post money valuation of roughly $5 billion.
The Palo Alto company was founded in 2026 by Igor Babuschkin, previously a researcher at DeepMind and OpenAI and a co founder of xAI. Its stated aim is to move the AI industry toward personally trainable assistants rather than the one size fits all models that dominate today.
River describes the plan as rebuilding the AI stack from the ground up. That covers model training, the product layer that sits on top of it, and new hardware designed to run personal AI agents locally, close to the person using them, rather than in a distant data centre.
The round has been characterised as both a seed and a Series A, which says something about how quickly the company skipped past the usual sequence. Investors are effectively funding a thesis and a founder rather than a shipped product.
The company joins a crowded field of well funded California labs, though few of them are betting on open weights and locally run agents the way River is.
