Ki 13, previously known as Ki Hydrogen, has raised $5 million in a Seed round led by HICO Investment Group. Burgest, Triple Impact Ventures, GiTV and Desai Ventures participated, alongside non-dilutive match funding from Innovate UK.

The company is based in London, and the money goes toward building an industrial pilot plant for its biomass electrolysis technology.

The chemistry is worth explaining. Ki 13 runs an electrochemical process that converts lignocellulosic biomass into two separate streams, green hydrogen and biogenic carbon dioxide. Both are feedstocks for synthetic fuels and chemicals, including e-SAF for aviation, e-methanol and e-methane.

Separating the two streams is what makes the output useful, because synthetic fuel production needs both a hydrogen source and a carbon source, and buying them separately is expensive.

The company closed a $1.1 million pre-seed in 2023 led by a group of climate-focused funds including Carbon13, the Founders Factory G-Force sustainability programme, Desai Ventures, HICO Investment Group and SFC Capital.

The work sits on the fuels side of renewable energy rather than on generation. Innovate UK’s match funding ties the pilot plant to UK public support for the sector.
