TAR, a company that builds off-grid power systems for AI data centers, has raised a $120 million Series A led by Spark Capital at a $1 billion post-money valuation. Buckley Ventures and Align Fund also backed the company. The round was announced on September 10, 2026.

TAR is headquartered in Austin, Texas, with an engineering office in San Francisco and manufacturing in West Texas. The funding will grow both offices, expand the West Texas logistics and manufacturing operation, and speed up deployments already in progress.

Power has become an obvious constraint on AI. Grid interconnection queues stretch for years, and data center projects keep stalling over grid capacity and local opposition. TAR’s answer is to ask nothing of the grid. It builds self-contained, modular systems that pair renewable energy generation with batteries in West Texas, so nothing it deploys competes with a community for electricity.

The company has verticalized the whole chain. TAR handles site selection, detailed engineering and design, procurement, logistics, civil works and construction, commissioning, and ongoing operation. Owning every step lets it move quickly without coordinating a long list of slow-moving contractors. A purpose-built deployment automation stack lets the team stand up generation capacity faster, at larger scale, and with far less field labor than conventional construction. The staff blends energy veterans from Hut 8, AES, and Vistra with robotics engineers from Zipline, GrayMatter Robotics, and Lucid Motors.

TAR is currently executing a utility-scale deployment alongside one of the largest neoclouds, developing a dedicated project campus, and finishing TAR Terminal One, its manufacturing and logistics center in West Texas.

Pat Becker and Leonhard Soenke founded the company in 2026. Leadership includes Jeff Silvan, head of projects, previously at Hut 8 and ON Energy; Christian Sanchez, head of power systems, formerly of Zelestra and AES; and Raphael Levy, head of supply chain, who came from NineDot and Vistra. TAR is hiring in Austin and San Francisco across engineering, robotics, power systems, operations, supply chain, and project management.
