Bird&Be has announced a $13 million USD ($18.3 million CAD) Series A, raised entirely in equity. The Business Development Bank of Canada’s Thrive Fund co-led the round with consumer-focused venture firm BFG Partners, and BAM Ventures, Founder Collective, Rejuvenation Ventures and HSR Ventures also took part.
The startup is based in Toronto. It sells subscriptions to fertility and wellness supplements along with test kits for reproductive wellness. CEO Samantha Diamond said the round closed in August and included a small amount of secondary issuances.
Bird&Be points out that about one in six people globally experience infertility, a figure the World Health Organization also reports. Infertility rates have climbed for both men and women over the past 30 years, and more Canadians are looking for fertility care. Studies have also found significant drops in measures of male fertility over the past 40 years, which is why the company offers reproductive health tests for both sexes.
Tech worker Breanna Hughes and Diamond, who worked in public relations, founded the company in 2019. Both have faced reproductive health challenges themselves. Bird&Be’s goal is to help customers spot and deal with fertility concerns early through test kits, then support their reproductive health with supplements that run from prenatal through postpartum. All of its supplements are regulated by Health Canada under the natural health product regulations.
The company is profitable and says it has become an eight-figure brand, growing close to 100 percent year over year. Roughly 75 percent of its direct-to-consumer revenue comes from subscriptions.
Labs, telehealth platforms and clinical service providers that work with women’s health brands can reach founders and executives at newly funded healthcare companies each week through Healthcare Sales Leads.
