RFC Power has closed a £10 million Series A and taken a new name along with it. The company now trades as Certain Energy.
The British Business Bank led the round, with Centrica plc, Ceres Power Holdings plc and Temasek Trust’s Catalytic Capital for Climate and Health taking part. The company was founded in 2017 as a spin-off from Imperial College and works on long duration energy storage in the United Kingdom.
Its batteries run on manganese, the twelfth most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. That choice matters for cost, but the more interesting property is architectural. Because it is a flow battery, discharge duration extends simply by making the electrolyte tanks bigger, which moves storage from a matter of hours into a matter of days without redesigning the system.
Round trip efficiency sits above 75 percent, which the company says puts it in economic range of lithium-ion batteries on key grid services while also covering the resilience and reserve duties a renewables heavy grid demands. The patented electrolyte is designed for a 20 year operating life with minimal capacity degradation, and the design and materials carry the potential to bring marginal storage costs down to roughly one tenth of comparable vanadium flow batteries, and well below lithium-ion storage systems.
The purpose of the raise is commercialisation. Certain Energy intends to prepare the technology for deployment stabilising grids and supplying power when renewable energy output falls away. Specific plans include a grid connected MWh class system in India, an expanded research facility at home, and building out the supply chain needed to deliver repeatable projects rather than one off installations.
