Extellis, a Duke University spinout based in Durham, North Carolina, has closed an oversubscribed $6.8 million Seed round led by Oval Park Capital. The round was announced on November 10, 2025.
Michael Boyarsky and David R. Smith founded the company in 2024 on the back of a decade of metamaterials research. Boyarsky, who serves as chief executive, started developing the core technology ten years ago as a graduate student in Professor Smith’s lab at Duke.
The company’s patented metasurface technology improves wide area scanning at a reliable high resolution regardless of weather. Its satellites can capture up to 10,000 synthetic aperture radar images a day, a hundredfold increase over current systems. Unlike optical satellites, radar works at night and sees through cloud cover, delivering near real time data within 15 minutes.
Duke Capital Partners, First Star Ventures, New Industry VC, Front Porch Venture Partners, EGB Capital and Blue Lake VC were among the others in the syndicate. Proceeds will fund the company’s first orbital demonstration, built with an external satellite bus provider, along with expansion of the team, facilities and customer partnerships.
