Matforge, which also operates as Discovered Materials, has raised $9 million in a Seed round led by Lightspeed India Partners. Y Combinator and Peak XV Partners joined, along with angel investors Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram and Thariq Shihipar.

The San Francisco company builds AI agents that hunt for new materials for semiconductor chips. The specific target is heat: thermal and nanoscale materials that pull warmth away from advanced chips and let them run more efficiently.

Materials discovery has historically been slow because it crosses disciplines. Simulation, synthesis and experimental validation each take time and each needs different expertise. Matforge compresses that into agents that run continuously on cloud infrastructure, and the company says the result is months of work done in days.

Its headline claim is a pointed one. Matforge says it matched the performance of existing thermal interface materials in three months using swarms of agents working around the clock, against formulations that large chemical companies spent decades developing.

Co founders Akash Ramdas and Advaith Sridhar plan to spend the money on the team, the lab and scaling the research agents. The California company will need physical validation to keep pace with the software.
