CivilGrid has closed a $26 million Series A led by Spark Capital, with Energy Impact Partners, Afore Capital, A*, Ford Street Ventures and SNR Ventures also taking part.

Founded in 2020 and based in San Francisco, the company sells a civil design platform aimed at one of the least visible problems in American infrastructure: nobody quite knows what is buried where. Its first large deployments have run through utilities in California.

The numbers behind that problem are not small. Legacy records and outdated systems contribute to roughly 200,000 utility strikes each year in the United States, and the resulting delays, rework and emergency response cost the industry an estimated $30 billion annually.

CivilGrid’s platform pulls fragmented site datasets into one collaborative map, covering subsurface assets, municipal projects, environmental regulations and land ownership. Asset owners, engineers, construction teams, municipalities and regulatory bodies work from that shared view, which shortens due diligence and simplifies project scoping and design.

The founder came to the problem honestly. CEO Josh Mackanic spent ten years at Pacific Gas and Electric before starting the company, and PG&E is now a customer. A case study with the utility identified around $60 million in avoidable paving costs across 1,600 planned natural gas distribution projects.

The customer base runs across government agencies, civil engineering firms and utility companies. With the new money, CivilGrid plans to accelerate national expansion and deepen the product.
