Ramona Optics has closed an oversubscribed $25 million Series A. ARCH Venture Partners led the financing, and Stealthpoint Ventures, ND Capital, Fall Line Capital, Hamamatsu Ventures, Murchison Capital Partners and Overlap Holdings joined in.

The company is based in Durham, North Carolina. It is a biotools company that builds massively parallel computational imaging for biopharma and biomedical customers who need both precision and scale.

Ramona plans to spend the new capital on scaling its commercial operations and advancing its proprietary multi-camera array microscopy, known as MCAM™. It will also expand the assays customers can run on the platform and deepen its strategic partnerships.

The MCAM design runs optics, illumination, sensing and computation in parallel. The result is the output of a room full of microscopes in a device that fits in the palm of a hand, which gets past the long-standing tradeoff between field of view and resolution. The technology now ships in benchtop systems for multi-well plate assays: Vireo™ for cellular models and Kestrel™ for small model organisms. Both pair imaging with embedded AI so large biological datasets can be acted on in real time.

Ramona holds 29 patents, and its team includes 12 PhDs with backgrounds in computational imaging, machine learning, computer architecture, cancer biology and neuroscience. Gregor Horstmeyer serves as CEO. Co-founder Mark Harfouche, PhD, is chief technology officer, Margaret Aery is chief operating officer, and co-founder Roarke Horstmeyer, PhD, is scientific director and an associate professor of biomedical engineering at Duke University. Patrick Weiss of ARCH chairs the board.

Instrument makers, reagent suppliers and lab software vendors can get verified contacts at newly funded life science companies every week through Life Science Lead Generation.
