Engram, a San Francisco, California startup building a learned memory layer for AI, has emerged from stealth with $98 million. The Seed round was co-led by General Catalyst and Modern Capital, and valued the 13-person company at $600 million.
The investor group is notable. It includes General Catalyst, Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia Capital, Factory, Modern, Amplify Partners, and Neo, along with angels and advisors such as Wiz co-founder and chief executive Assaf Rappaport, OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy, and AI and robotics researcher Pieter Abbeel, co-director of the Berkeley AI Research Lab.
Founded in 2026 by researchers from Stanford, Berkeley, and Cornell, including chief executive Dan Biderman and chief technology officer Sabri Eyuboglu, Engram builds a memory layer that lets AI models study an organization’s specific context. The models get smarter and more cost-efficient the more they are used. The company says it compresses that knowledge into reusable model memory that matches or beats frontier models while using just 1 to 10 percent of the tokens.
Engram launched with Microsoft, Notion, and Harvey as early partners. Microsoft is evaluating the models within Microsoft 365, Notion is integrating the memory layer into custom agents, and Harvey is applying it to legal workflows.
