Aurelius Systems has closed a $40 million Series A co-led by Draper Associates and KAS Venture Partners. General Catalyst and Hanwha Defense USA were among the other participants.
The San Francisco, California company builds AI powered counter drone systems that rely on autonomous directed energy rather than interceptors. Its flagship platform, Archimedes, is an autonomous laser based system built to protect military forces and critical infrastructure, and the company positions it against conventional air defence on two points: response time and cost per engagement.
Demand in defense for this category has moved quickly, and Aurelius has been building the credentials to meet it. The company recently completed integration partnerships with American Rheinmetall and has validated its systems at military operations.
The capital goes toward advancing Archimedes, along with vertical integration intended to reduce supply chain risk and shorten delivery times. Aurelius also plans to expand production capacity and take the platform into new markets.
Headcount is set to follow. The company currently employs 19 people and expects to pass 40 by the end of 2026.
