Borderless AI Secures $5M Funding, Launches HRGPT AI Tool
Borderless AI, a Toronto-based developer of human resources software, has secured an additional $5 million in funding as an extension to its previous $27 million seed round. This latest investment includes participation from Aidan Gomez and Ivan Zhang, co-founders of Cohere Inc., a large language model developer that raised $500 million last June, valuing it at $3.5 billion.
The company specializes in global payroll management and team hiring within the human resources and compliance sectors. It provides employer of record (EOR) services, enabling businesses to hire and pay employees internationally while adhering to local labor laws. Borderless AI’s platform offers a suite of related services, including global contractor management, localized benefits, and visa and immigration support.
The new funding will be used to build more search features and launch HR-optimized AI agents. In conjunction with this announcement, Borderless AI has expanded its AI feature set with a new tool called HRGPT. This tool is positioned as a search engine for HR use cases, featuring a chatbot interface that enables HR teams to find regulatory requirements and other necessary information using prompts. Employees can also query HRGPT about topics such as their company’s expense reimbursement policy.
HRGPT uses AI to scan an enterprise’s internal file repositories for relevant information and can fetch data from the public web. It includes citations in each prompt response to allow workers to verify the underlying AI models’ output. Besides retrieving information, HRGPT can automate common HR tasks, such as generating employment contracts to help companies avoid the legal expenses associated with creating agreements from scratch. It is also capable of creating job descriptions.
Borderless AI’s partnership with Cohere has been instrumental in developing its AI capabilities. The companies collaborated to train a custom AI model for its HR platform. This partnership has enabled Borderless AI to enhance its AI feature set, making it more comprehensive and efficient for HR teams and employees.
The company’s core EOR offering is available in more than 170 countries, simplifying the workflow for enterprises hiring international employees. It also provides an artificial intelligence expense management tool that enables workers to upload receipts for business purchases and request reimbursements. HR teams have access to a centralized file repository for storing employment documents.
Borderless AI was founded in 2022 by Wilson Cross and Sean Aggarwal. It emerged from stealth in March 2024 with $27 million in seed funding led by Susquehanna and Aglaé Ventures. The company aims to leverage AI to automate and speed up the process of onboarding, managing, and paying international team members, bringing economic empowerment to the world.
The latest funding and the launch of HRGPT mark significant milestones in Borderless AI’s journey to reshape the future of work. By leveraging AI and expanding its feature set, the company is positioning itself as a key player in the HR technology space, aiming to simplify global hiring and payroll management for enterprises worldwide.
