Topdog has raised $2.5 million in a Seed round led by Boston Seed Capital. The Raine Group, Bullpen Capital, Versus Ventures, Spoondrift Capital and Permit Ventures also joined. The company previously raised $1.6 million in pre-seed funding from Lightspeed Venture Partners, bringing its total to $4.1 million.

Topdog is based in New York. It is a real-money skill gaming company that builds real-time multiplayer games for sports fans and gamers. The new capital will go toward growing its app and adding more multiplayer sports, card and strategy games.

Other backers include FanDuel co-founder Nigel Eccles, Revenant VC founder Ryan Moore and gaming industry consultant Dustin Gouker. Boston Seed, The Raine Group and Bullpen Capital were all early investors in DraftKings or FanDuel.

Topdog’s games are built around live interaction rather than playing against a house or comparing individual scores after the fact. Titles such as Basketball Hustle, in which players draft teams and make strategic calls throughout a match, along with 21 Hustle, Tilt and Pinfall, are turn-by-turn experiences where both players act at once and react to each other. That design is meant to create faster games and reduce the chance that one dominant strategy or automated play decides the outcome.

The company built its own end-to-end technology stack covering matchmaking, player liquidity, payments, fraud detection and live operations, with the goal of consistently pairing players with well-matched opponents. Aman Agarwal and Jatin Narang founded Topdog and bring more than a decade of combined skill gaming experience.

Payment processors, fraud prevention vendors and user acquisition agencies can get verified founder contacts at newly funded gaming startups each week through the B2B Sales Leads List.
